organizing SYNERGY

After the first meeting at Karma, Maryam and Evolving Perceptions officially adopted SYNERGY. Maryam named the project and we considered a timeline and a jury to choose the artists who would participate on teams. Here's a description of the project: 1. artists apply to participate on a team of 2 to 4 artists to create a piece of art of various mediums that they choose and design 2. in the application each artist describes why they are interested in collaboration 3. a jury panel selects the artists and places them in teams 4. the teams become a part of the project as a whole and all of us discuss the process of creating the art and sharing this experience through film with the public 6. the art making, filming, continual fundraising events and activities and consciousness raising ensue 7. final exhibition and gala 8. a public vote and discussion along with viewing of the SYNERGY documentary.......That's it in a nutshell. It's a huge undertaking. We had a second meeting for artists on Jan. 24 at Karma. It was a snowy day, but there was a respectable turnout. Maryam published a brochure and began working with several grant making foundations. The call for artists went out, to be submitted by March 30, 2005. We both started planning an event to take place at The Dennis and Philip Ratner Museum in Bethesda, to announce the artists who were selected to participate on teams. Maryam put together a very distinguished jury panel: Leanne Mella, senior visual arts program specialist with the State Dept., Laili Nasr, curator of art, National Gallery of Art, and Dr. Anne C. Fisher of Anne C. Fisher Gallery in Georgetown. I'll tell you about the jurying process and "The Artists Reality Show" at The Dennis and Philip Ratner Museum, in my next post.

Dear Marsha and Maryam,

Congratulations to both of you for launching SYNERGY and this blog. Also, special congratulations to all of the artists who have been selected to participate in SYNERY. It takes tremendous dedication, energy and vision to conceive and to bring to fruition such a creative project. Both of you are to be commended for increasing the dialogue about the visual arts.

Hope to see you both soon.

James

P.S. Let me also personally invite both of you, as well as all the SYNERGY artists and supporters, to attend the opening reception this Sunday for the League of Reston Artists 12th Annual Juried Fine Exhibition at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery at Lake Anne in Reston. We were honored to have Lenny Campello jury this exhibition.
